Surgical Checklist

Surgical Checklist

This surgical checklist is to prepare you for dropping your pet off the morning of their surgery. At your pets surgical intake a veterinary technician will meet with you to go over our authorization form. Prepping for your pets surgery begins the night prior to their scheduled procedure. The morning of surgery a veterinary technician will meet with you at drop off to review the following information. If you are having someone drop off and pick up your pet it is important that you send them knowing the following information.

Is your pet fasted?
All food and treats must be removed and out of your pets reach by midnight the night prior to surgery; water can stay available until you drop your pet off. Please do not allow pets outside unattended prior to drop off. This ensures they do not ingest anything prior to surgery. Pets who are not fasted increase their risk of aspiration and regurgitation. We will likely reschedule your pet if they ate.

What medication(s)/supplement(s) is your pet currently taking?
It is very important we know all medications and supplements your pet is currently taking. This will determine what medications are safe to give your pet while they are in hospital and during their recovery days. Some supplements (especially CBD) can lessen the effectiveness of anesthetics. Knowing their supplements will allow us to adjust their anesthesia drugs appropriately. We will also need to know when the last dose was given?

The best contact number for the day of surgery.
Listing a contact number of a person authorized to make medical decisions for your pet is necessary. In case of emergency or concerns we will call the first provided number, a secondary number is also appreciated. Please be available throughout the day to answer the phone. A surgical team member will call to inform you of your pets recovery status and to book discharge appointments following their procedure.

Additional Services
It is common for owners to request additional services at the time of surgery. These services can be nail trims, vaccine boosters, rechecking medical conditions (skin/ears), microchip implantation, anal gland expression ect. Please note that additional services will add additional cost.

Things to keep in mind
The more information you provide us, the better we can care for your pet. We understand that leaving your pet in the hospital can be stressful for both you and your beloved pet. Our staff takes pride in providing you and your pet with the compassionate care and attention they deserve. If your pet becomes stressed at any point during the day we will likely call you to come pick up earlier.
